Alma GB Elections for parent-elected governor

We are currently recruiting two new parent-elected Governors, who will serve from January 2018 to January 2022.

What skills or experience does a parent-elected governor need?

School Governing Bodies are legally-responsible groups bound by collective responsibility, with responsibilities that are set out in detail by the Department for Education and Ofsted. These include responsibility for the financial and educational performance of the school. No Governor is there to represent a “constituency”. Once elected, Parent Governors take on the same strategic and overall responsibility for the school as all other Governors. They will take up a particular responsibility, dependent on their skills and expertise, e.g. quality of teaching, communications, finance, etc. 

Laura and Emma are both qualified, practicing and experienced primary school teachers and their expertise has been extremely valuable at the Governing Body. We welcome applications from parents with a wide range of skills and experience. At this stage in Alma’s development, we would particularly benefit from new Governors with expertise in the following areas: teaching, learning and curriculum; marketing and communications; law; school leadership; accountancy; senior management. Experience of serving in a Trustee or non-executive capacity in another organisation is particularly helpful for all new Governors.

How to apply

To put yourself forwards to be included in the election, please read the Candidate Brief carefully and complete this online form. You will be asked on that form to write a paragraph of max 300 words that sets out why you would like to be a Governor and what skills and experience you would bring to the role. This paragraph will be shared with all parents to inform their decision about who they vote for. You must complete the online nomination form by Midnight on Thursday 19th October if you wish to stand for election.

All voting will be 100% anonymous and will be undertaken online. There is one vote per parent, i.e. if a child has two parents, they have one vote each; if a parent has more than one child at the school, they still have only one vote.
