The Alma Chanukah Party

.

The annual Alma Chanukah party was a riot of sugar, wild kids and content parents, glitter and icing – a perfect combination. This was the first big event in our new school, and it worked brilliantly.

The classrooms were transformed into hives of creativity and fun – from chanunkia and dreidle making, complete with lots of glue and glitter, to a classroom making use of little hands to roll out over 500 Chanukah candles (maybe Alma should start a factory…)

No Chanukah party would be complete without chocolate coins and doughnuts, and there were signs that our little school is growing (either in numbers or waist-line) as there were no doughnuts left this year, unlike previous years when we had to force them on unsuspecting members of the public.

The highlight for most parents was watching their children perform Chanukah songs in their class groups. The cute kids in Reception did a great little dance, Year 1 got jiggy with glow sticks, Year 3 gave us a rendition of the songs that would later be performed in the Houses of Parliament, and Year 2 sung the school anthem – Sufganiyot.

One of Alma’s greatest attributes is the sense of a unique communityparents, children and staff always relish the opportunity to hang out, come together and celebrate, and this is the catalyst behind such a  special atmosphere within the school. Long may it continue.

Yom Ha'atsma'ut 2017

YomHa 1 YomHa3 YamHa2
YomHa6 YomHa5 YomHa4

On Yom Ha'atsma'ut, Israel's 69th Independence Day, Alma Primary School went on a "journey" to Israel with their "passports" (written in Ivrit). After our morning tfillot in which we sang "im tirtsu" - a quotation from Herzl himself, we watched a video on interesting facts on Israel and "took off" to visit four different cities in the country.
1. Jerusalem:
The Jerusalem Station covered a presentation of the holy sites in Israel's capital city. We heard songs like "yerushalayim shel zahav" and discussed the old and new neighbourhoods. Most exciting, though, was the arts and crafts activity that followed: a golden mosaic to decorate the ancient city walls!
2. Tel Aviv:
The city that never sleeps is full of high tech companies and innovations that our small start up nation has generated for the good of the world, such as the irrigation drip, Waze app, cherry tomato and more. Children worked in small groups to create ideas of their own, such as a time machine, a "smart" food vending machine, a robot that does your house chores, a never ending chocolate fountain and more.
3. Galilee
In the North of Israel you can find many various ethnicities and religions, such as Christians, Druze, Muslims, Bahais, Circassians and of course - Jews. Students were made familiar with the Israelis relationships with their neighbours and heard a story about two brothers who had an argument. We then had to suggest ways to make "shlom bayit" - peace at home.
4. Eilat:
Kids "ran" an Israeli restaurant making chocolate balls and taking selfies on the Red Sea "beach".
