World Book Day: March 2017

We celebrated national World Book Day on Thursday morning! We started with a costume parade for the whole school, continued by designing our own covers for our favourite books, of which some will be chosen to decorate our new library! Then we worked with other year groups to write silly and funny stories and read books together. Morah Dorit/Moreh Ofer even read us a story in Ivrit! All Tzedakah money collected will go to Book Aid International which sends books to children less fortunate than us http://www.bookaid.org/.

YR2: The Museum Of London Docklands

On 15th June, Year 2 had a science trip to the Museum of London Docklands during which the children learnt about forces and motion and what makes boats move. They learnt that London is where it is because people wanted to be near the Thames  and that boats were first moved by rowing (paddles), then by sails (wind) and then eventually by engines. They learnt how boats used the wind to steer the sails before engines and had a go at this themselves. Afterwards, in the workshop, the children had a chance to get stuck in and practise moving boats along water using wind and energy from a tightened elastic band. This showed us how boats with propellers could reverse without turning all the way around. Year 2 had a fantastic time, thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learnt a huge amount about the science of boats. They were brilliant representatives of Alma and were very enthusiastic and sensible around the museum, making us very proud.

Liquid Science

Year 3 have been super swanky scientists this week! We tested which liquids would rot our teeth, using egg shells to represent teeth. 
We worked in partners and tested Coca Cola, vinegar and water and we recorded our results on an investigation sheet.

Year 1 have been exploring senses. We know that objects feel different when our nerve endings are covered with a sock! We also experimented with tasting and smelling more than one thing at a time.

YR2 March: Trip to the V&A Museum of Childhood

On Friday 31st March, Year 2 went to the V&A Museum of Childhood for a workshop all about the History of Clothes! We learnt about what people wore in Victorian days, looked at old types of fastenings (buttons of all materials, hook & eye) and new types of fastenings (velcro), played with belts and laces and sorted clothes by materials. We had an amazing and fun day and learnt so much! And of course, everyone's favourite part of any trip - lunch!

Yom Ha'atsma'ut 2017

On Yom Ha'atsma'ut, Israel's 69th Independence Day, Alma Primary School went on a "journey" to Israel with their "passports" (written in Ivrit). After our morning tfillot in which we sang "im tirtsu" - a quotation from Herzl himself, we watched a video on interesting facts on Israel and "took off" to visit four different cities in the country.
1. Jerusalem:
The Jerusalem Station covered a presentation of the holy sites in Israel's capital city. We heard songs like "yerushalayim shel zahav" and discussed the old and new neighbourhoods. Most exciting, though, was the arts and crafts activity that followed: a golden mosaic to decorate the ancient city walls! 
2. Tel Aviv:
The city that never sleeps is full of high tech companies and innovations that our small start up nation has generated for the good of the world, such as the irrigation drip, Waze app, cherry tomato and more. Children worked in small groups to create ideas of their own, such as a time machine, a "smart" food vending machine, a robot that does your house chores, a never ending chocolate fountain and more.
3. Galilee
In the North of Israel you can find many various ethnicities and religions, such as Christians, Druze, Muslims, Bahais, Circassians and of course - Jews. Students were made familiar with the Israelis relationships with their neighbours and heard a story about two brothers who had an argument. We then had to suggest ways to make "shlom bayit" - peace at home.
4. Eilat:
Kids "ran" an Israeli restaurant making chocolate balls and taking selfies on the Red Sea "beach".
