Testing the properties of materials

We needed to make an umbrella for our class teddy bear, Freddie Teddy. We had paper, plastic, fabric and metal stretched onto paper cups which we then dripped water onto to see which material was the most waterproof.

First, we made predictions as to what would be the most suitable material to make the umbrella. Next, we set up the experiment making sure the cup and the amount of drops of water were kept the same and only the material was changed- the variable. We recorded the results and made our conclusions. We checked whether our predictions were correct.

We discussed how even though tin foil/ metal was as waterproof as plastic, it would not be a suitable material for an umbrella as it would become hot and may not be as flexible as plastic.
